Cisco Catalyst 9800-80 Wireless Controller (C9800-80-K9) Product Overview
The 9800-80 scales to 6,000 access points, 64,000 concurrent clients, and 80 Gbps of throughput. Hardware includes eight built-in 10-GE SFP+ interfaces, a single Ethernet Port Adapter slot for optional 100-G modular uplinks, a fixed forwarding processor with up to 100 Gbps sustained data traffic capability, a dedicated 30-G crypto processor, up to 64 GB of field-replaceable ECC-protected DRAM, and 32 GB of internal bootflash storage. The 2U chassis weighs 31.5 lbs (14.3 kg), includes dual hot-swappable AC power supply slots, and supports both 10-GE and 1-GE SFPs as well as optional EPA interfaces.
The controller supports centralised, FlexConnect and SD-Access fabric modes, integrates with Cisco DNA Center for enhanced analytics and automation, and features advanced security tools such as Encrypted Traffic Analytics (ETA) for detection of threats in encrypted wireless traffic, Secure Boot, image signing, runtime defences, and hardware authenticity checks to secure the entire network infrastructure.
Ideal Deployment
The C9800-80-K9 series is ideal for large enterprise wireless cores, campus headend and regional aggregation, service provider Wi-Fi gateway deployments, and high-density environments such as stadiums, convention centers, airports, and university campuses requiring seamless scaling to thousands of access points and tens of thousands of concurrent clients. For smaller campus requirements (up to 250 APs), the Catalyst 9800-L model offers the same software feature set in a compact 1RU half-width chassis; for moderate-scale deployments (up to 2,000 APs), the 9800-40 provides a 40 Gbps, 1RU alternative.
