The Cisco Catalyst 9800-L Wireless Controller (C9800-L-C-K9) is a fixed, enterprise-ready wireless LAN controller purpose-built for small to midsize organizations that require secure, scalable, and always-on Wi-Fi connectivity. Built natively on Cisco IOS XE, it brings the power of Cisco's intent-based networking and RF excellence to a compact, cost-effective platform.
This copper-uplink model features two built-in 10G/Multigigabit Ethernet ports plus four 2.5G/1G Multigigabit Ethernet ports, providing flexible and high-speed backbone integration. The controller supports up to 250 access points and 5,000 clients at 5 Gbps baseline throughput, with performance licensing enabling 500 APs, 10,000 clients, and 10 Gbps capacity on demand-without hardware upgrades.
Engineered for continuous operation, the 9800-L includes high-availability features such as Stateful Switchover (SSO), N+1 redundancy, hot patching, and in-service software upgrades (ISSU) that maintain client connectivity during planned and unplanned events. Deployment modes include centralized campus, FlexConnect for distributed branches, and SD-Access fabric wireless. Advanced security is integrated with Secure Boot, image signing, runtime defenses, hardware trust anchor, Encrypted Traffic Analytics (ETA), and WPA3 support. The open and programmable Cisco IOS XE architecture exposes NETCONF/YANG APIs and model-driven streaming telemetry, enabling automation and seamless Cisco Catalyst Center (formerly DNA Center) integration.
The controller is supplied with a 110W AC/DC adapter (max power consumption 86.9W), measures a compact 1RU half-width chassis (215.9 mm × 230.1 mm × 40.2 mm, 1.79 kg), and supports side-by-side installation in standard 19-inch racks. Cisco DNA subscriptions are required per access point for licensing compliance.
